Why telemedicine in Basel?
Basel has three walk-in options for blood tests with drop in lab, SYNLAB and Unilabs — more than most cities. Despite this, medical specialisation for testosterone deficiency is thinly spread. Via telemedicine, you combine Basel's strong laboratory infrastructure with a specialist who deals with hormone therapy every day.
Care situation: Testosterone therapy in the pharmaceutical capital
Basel is known as a pharmaceutical hub — Roche and Novartis are headquartered here. And the University Hospital Basel (USB) operates its own clinic for endocrinology, diabetology and metabolism. However, this clinic primarily treats diabetes, thyroid and metabolic diseases. Male hormone therapy (andrology) is not a focus area.
There are individual private contact points such as the Endocrinology Basel practice, which explicitly lists testosterone deficiency in men as a treatment area. But capacities are limited, and waiting times for new patients are common. The USB itself only accepts patients with a medical referral.
For men in Baselland — from Liestal to Reinach to Laufen — it is compounded by the fact that the few specialists practise exclusively in the city of Basel. Via telemedicine, the distance between home and specialist is irrelevant: blood test at the local family doctor, assessment via video.
Wait times: Endocrinologist vs. Telemedicine
Traditional Path
Several weeks (USB: only with referral, private practices fully booked)
Family doctor → Referral → Endocrinologist → Start of therapy
Via Telemedicine
A few days after blood test
Blood test at family doctor → Video consultation → Prescription

Telemedicine for Basel-Stadt and Baselland
Telemedicine is independent of your place of residence. Here is an overview of how the process works in different regions of the canton of Basel:
Basel-Stadt
Three walk-in labs (drop in lab, SYNLAB, Unilabs) within walking distance. Yet: endocrinologists at USB only with referral, private practices fully booked. Telemedicine brings the specialist to the patient.
Liestal & Upper Baselland
Cantonal Hospital Baselland in Liestal provides basic care, but no specialised andrology. Blood test at the family doctor, the rest via video.
Reinach, Binningen, Allschwil
The larger agglomeration communities in Baselland have good family doctor coverage. For endocrinology you would have to go to Basel city — or use telemedicine.
Laufental (Laufen, Breitenbach)
At the southern edge of the canton, bordering the Jura. Basel city is already a 30-minute drive from here. Telemedicine is the most practical solution.
Basel is the smallest of the major Swiss cities, but as the pharmaceutical capital it has an above-average medical infrastructure — including three walk-in labs for blood tests. For testosterone deficiency, there is still no specialised contact point: the endocrinology at USB focuses on diabetes, and the few private practices are often fully booked. Via telemedicine, you use Basel's laboratory infrastructure and additionally get the specialised physician that the region lacks.
