Testosterone Therapy in Glarus

Glarus is one of the few small cantons with an endocrinology service of its own: the Cantonal Hospital Glarus runs an endocrinology and diabetology consultation. But the way in leads through a referral from your family doctor — and in the Glarnerland that means a drive through half the valley for many. Via telemedicine, the blood test stays at the practice in your village and the specialist assessment comes by video.

Why telemedicine in Glarus?

The Cantonal Hospital Glarus covers hormone disorders broadly, but it does not list a dedicated andrology consultation. On top of that come the referral from your family doctor and the trip to Burgstrasse. Via telemedicine, you receive an assessment focused on testosterone from home.

Care situation: endocrinology is there — but at the end of a long valley

Unlike many small cantons, Glarus has an endocrinology service of its own. The Cantonal Hospital Glarus at Burgstrasse 99 runs an endocrinology and diabetology consultation, headed by PD Dr. med. Zoran Erlic, who has led the department since March 2025. It treats diseases of the hormone-producing organs — from the thyroid and the adrenal gland to the gonads. A dedicated andrology consultation is not listed among its services.

Access runs through the family doctor: as a rule, family physicians register their patients for the specialist assessment at the outpatient consultation. For men from Linthal, Elm or Braunwald, every single appointment means a drive along the one valley axis to Glarus. And anyone looking for a second opinion or an explicitly andrological work-up leaves the canton via Ziegelbrücke towards Zurich or St. Gallen.

For blood draws, the situation is solid: the family practices in the valley run their own in-house labs and send special analyses to an external laboratory by courier. What the Glarnerland does not have is a collection centre run by one of the laboratory chains — Dr. Risch, Unilabs and Medbase list no address in the canton in their location directories. Telemedicine fits exactly this pattern: blood at the practice in your village, the specialised assessment by video.

Telemedicine for the whole Glarnerland

Telemedicine is independent of your place of residence. Here is an overview of how the process works in different regions of the canton of Glarus:

Glarus & Netstal

Cantonal capital with the hospital on Burgstrasse. Endocrinology consultation available, referral by the family doctor required. Blood draws at the Glärnisch Praxis on Stampfgasse or at Ärzte Netstal. Telemedicine: faster access to a specialised assessment, without the referral chain.

Glarus Nord (Näfels, Mollis, Niederurnen, Bilten)

The open part of the canton towards the Linth plain, closest to Zurich via the A3 motorway. Family practices with their own lab, such as Praxis LETZ in Näfels. Blood test on site, specialist via video — the trip out of the canton is unnecessary.

Glarus Süd — valley floor (Schwanden, Luchsingen, Linthal)

From the upper valley floor, every specialist appointment is a journey: the way always leads first to Glarus and then out via Ziegelbrücke. Blood draws at the Impuls group practice in Schwanden, consultation by video from home.

Sernftal (Engi, Matt, Elm)

The canton's only side valley with villages of its own, connected via Schwanden. No specialist on site. Blood test at the family practice in the valley, the assessment of your values comes by video.

Kerenzerberg, Klöntal & Braunwald

The higher ground away from the valley axis. An appointment down in the valley easily eats up half a day — travel, waiting time, return trip. Telemedicine replaces exactly that trip; it does not replace the blood test.

Glarus is a canton with a single traffic axis: the valley opens only to the north towards the Linth plain, everything else ends at the mountains. The S 25 runs hourly from Linthal via Glarus to Zurich, and the A3 motorway and main road 17 follow the same line. Medically, that means: anyone with an appointment coming from the Sernftal or from Linthal does not plan for an hour, but for half a day. The Cantonal Hospital Glarus covers a great deal professionally — but every appointment costs the same drive. Telemedicine turns this around: the blood test happens at the practice in your village, and the assessment comes into your living room by video.

Frequently Asked Questions about TRT in Glarus

Is there a specialist for hormone disorders in the canton of Glarus?
Yes. The Cantonal Hospital Glarus runs an endocrinology and diabetology consultation covering diseases of the hormone-producing organs — including the gonads. Patients are usually registered by their family doctor. The hospital does not list a dedicated andrology consultation. Via telemedicine, you receive an assessment focused on testosterone without the referral chain.
Where can I have blood drawn in the canton of Glarus?
Easiest at your family practice — the practices in the valley have their own labs and forward special analyses by courier. Documented options include the Glärnisch Praxis in Glarus, Ärzte Netstal, Praxis LETZ in Näfels and the Impuls group practice in Schwanden. There is no laboratory chain collection centre in the canton. Important: in the morning before 11 a.m., fasting.
Why telemedicine if the Cantonal Hospital Glarus offers endocrinology?
Because the two stand side by side. If you would like to use the consultation at the cantonal hospital, do so — it is there. Telemedicine replaces neither the blood test nor the hospital, but the referral chain and the travel: you speak directly with a physician focused on testosterone, a few days after the blood test, from home.
Do I need to travel to Zurich or St. Gallen for Swiss TRT?
No — that's the point of telemedicine. Blood test at your family practice in the Glarnerland, consultation via video from home. No route via Ziegelbrücke, no commuting to Zurich or St. Gallen.
How much does testosterone therapy cost via Swiss TRT?
Initial consultation CHF 200, Therapy start CHF 500, Follow-up CHF 100 (every 3 months in years 1–2, then every 6 months). Medication and laboratory costs separate. Laboratory costs at the family doctor via basic insurance.
Does health insurance pay for TRT?
The laboratory costs at the family doctor are covered by basic insurance. The consultation via Swiss TRT is self-pay. Some supplementary insurances reimburse telemedicine services — check your policy.
Can I use Swiss TRT from Linthal, Elm or Braunwald?
Yes — telemedicine works from every corner of the canton. You have the blood test done at the nearest family practice, for example in Schwanden; the video consultation takes place at your home. Especially from the upper valley floor and the Sernftal, that saves half a day of travel per appointment.
How quickly will I see results with TRT?
More energy and better sleep after 3–6 weeks. Improvements in libido and mood after 6–12 weeks. Changes in body composition (less belly fat, more muscle tone) after 3–6 months. The therapy is monitored via blood test every 3 months and adjusted.
